Dan and Tommy from The Curiosity Hour Podcast were kind enough to invite me on their show! They asked me all about what inspires me (Beyoncé), the evolution of my religious beliefs, and so many deep things. If you haven’t yet heard their show, I highly recommend it.
On Saturday, an acquaintance of mine posted in a private Facebook group of which we’re both a part, that she was both angry and scared about the events in Charlottesville, VA. She’s an African-American woman in a group where the majority of the other women are white. The rest of the group told her we heard her, we support her, and we were scared by all of it too. But that didn’t feel good enough for me.
The successes of Wonder Woman and Girls Trip are giving us a glimmer into what could happen when more women are included in film. One of the biggest hurdles to an equal playing field for us is how motherhood is handled by production behind the scenes and how it is depicted on-screen. I wanted to hear from my friend Heather Denton who has worked as an first and second assistant director on all kinds on films, including ones for Jill Soloway and Quentin Tarantino. She gives me the skinny on how she has managed motherhood with her career behind the camera and how she makes an effort to support female directors.
Nicole Blades is many things. She’s a journalist. She’s an author. She’s a podcaster. She’s a mom. She’s a bundle of talent and insight partnered with the gentle spirit we’ve come to expect from Canadians. Luckily for the U.S., she lives here now, and is coming out with her 3rd (!!!) novel this fall.
